The name Nouakchott (Arabic: نواكشوط) originates from the Zenaga Berber dialect, where it means 'place of the winds' (Nwākšūṭ). This name reflects its location at the intersection of the Atlantic Ocean and the Sahara Desert, where the city is subjected to persistent maritime breezes and the hot, dust-laden harmattan winds from the desert interior.
Before 1958, the site was home to a tiny Imraguen fishing village of fewer than 100 people. As Mauritania prepared for independence from France, leaders sought a new capital located within their own borders (the previous administrative center, Saint-Louis, was in Senegal). Nouakchott was selected as a neutral, planned capital to bridge the cultural and ethnic gap between the Arab-Berber north and the sub-Saharan African south.
Construction began in 1958, and the city officially became the capital upon independence on November 28, 1960. Originally designed for just 15,000 residents, the city's population skyrocketed during the 1970s and 80s as severe droughts forced nomadic populations into the urban center. Today, Nouakchott contains roughly one-third of Mauritania's population and is a vibrant, if sprawling, crossroads of Moorish, Haratine, and West African cultures.
The city faces unique environmental pressures, including desertification and encroaching sand dunes, which require constant urban management. Despite these challenges, it serves as the nation's political, economic, and educational heart, housing the country's main port and the gateway to its vast mineral and fishing resources.
The area's rich history is reflected in the remarkable people connected to it.
