Etymology & Origin

The name Nebraska comes from the Otoe word Ni Brasge, meaning "flat water." This refers to the Platte River, which flows through the state and is characterized by its broad, shallow channel.

French explorers translated the Otoe name as Nebraska, and it was adopted for the territory and state. Nebraska became the 37th state on March 1, 1867. The demonym Nebraskan is formed by adding -an to the state name.
