Etymology & Origin

The name Windhoek is derived from the Afrikaans word for "windy corner" (wind + hoek). It was originally known as Ai-Gams (Hot Springs) by the Nama people and Otjomuise (Place of Steam) by the Herero, referring to the local thermal springs. The modern name was established in the 1840s by Jonker Afrikaner, a Nama leader, who named it after the Winterhoek Mountains in the Cape Colony where his ancestors lived.
