Etymology & Origin

The name Harare is derived from the name of the Zezuru (Shona) chief Neharare, who lived on the hill where the city was founded. His name means "he who does not sleep," referring to his vigilance. The city was founded by the British in 1890 as Salisbury (after the British Prime Minister) but was renamed Harare on the second anniversary of Zimbabwe's independence in 1982 to honor its indigenous roots.
